Tennille Mykula, a seasoned instructor, and staff member at Emmaline Bags, will be in the classroom to show you how to sew The SEQUOIA Satchel (This class is held at our shop in Spruce Grove, Alberta. At this time we do not offer virtual classes.)

Difficulty Level: For an ADVANCED BEGINNER bag maker. Individuals have made A few simple bags, and are ready to move up a level to learn to sew with different fabric substrates, like waxed canvas & Harris Tweed, plus learn to complete some hardware/rivet installation. You will need to be confident on your sewing machine and be ready to sew at a faster pace, and try new techniques.

Skills Required: Must be able follow pattern directions to cut & prepare fabric using the provided templates and/or cutting list on your own prior to class. Must be able to use a rotary cutter, mat and gridded ruler on your own prior to class

Tools Required: A rotary cutter, mat and gridded rulers are needed prior to class for prep, but not required on class day. You must have your own sewing machine, (or rent one from us), with a zipper foot, and basic sewing supplies.

SUPPLIES & PATTERN:

  • The material list will be provided to you after purchase.
  • We have the complete bag making kit - HERE.
  • Each student must own their own pattern, and it is available in store on on our website in print HERE, or as a digital download PDF from Hammerstitch.

DETAILS:

  • You will receive the class prep shortly after your purchase (by the next business day), when we will send you an email with helpful links to products & patterns, plus the requirements for the class. 
  • We can help you with your class supplies in the shop, just pay us a visit!
  • Sewers must complete the prep work that is emailed out after class signup. 

Guidelines:

  • Sewers must bring their own sewing machine, all materials, and equipment.
  • Cutting table, ironing station, coffee and tea will be available.
  • Class is between 9:00 am & 4:00 pm, with a 30 minute lunch break at 12:00. You can leave for your lunch or bring a lunch to eat at your sewing table. We do have a microwave and utensils. You are welcome to sew on your own through the break if you choose to. 
  • If we don't have our class minimum 2 weeks before class, the class will be cancelled and fees refunded.
  • Class prep instructions (homework) will be provided by the instructor and emailed to you again 2 weeks before class. You are welcome to purchase the pattern and supplies before this date if you desire. 
  • There are no refunds on classes, but if you let us know at least 14 days before the class, we can issue you a class credit if you can't make it.
  • Please note that the 10% off on orders discount does not apply to classes. 

SEWING MACHINE RENTALS:

We have 8 x bernette 08 Straight Stitch sewing machines for rent during classes. These are high speed, heavy duty mechanical machines, equipped with an extension table. They work wonderful for bag making, and although they are powerhouse machines, they are not "industrial", making them very easy to use. Just thread and stitch! (Note: They are only straight stitch machines. Brief threading and usage instructions will be provided if required.) 

Included with rental: 

  • Extension Table 
  • 1 x Standard Straight Stitch Foot
  • 1 x Zipper Foot (Other feet available upon request)
  • 1 x Bobbin
  • Screwdriver 

Requirements:

Only to be used with a thread weight of Tex 45 or under. (NOTE: Tex 70 thread can be used if it is bonded.) Use with Highspeed (HLx5) needles or any home sewing needle system (130/705 H), such as Schmetz needles. These are all sold in our shop.
